Prescription medication when taken as prescribed by a physician can save your life, yet sometimes medication is no longer required or is stopped due to an adverse reaction, leaving the consumer with unused medication. If prescription and over-the-counter medications are not disposed of properly, they could pose a risk to the environment or people and animals that may ingest the medication. The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have developed guidelines for consumers on how to dispose of unused medicines at home.

Do Not Flush Medications

You may remember when you could simply flush leftover medication down the toilet? Flushing medications is no longer acceptable according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), unless the drug manufacturer specifically recommends that method of disposal. Over the past few years, high levels of many medications began showing up in community water supplies and this is causing some concern. The impact this has on people, animals and the environment remains undetermined.
