In show business the terms “Professional” and its evil-twin “Un-Professional” are used with such frequency, and to describe so many different spheres of an actor’s vocation, that their meaning has become unclear. This seven-part series is meant to identify, define and comment on the principal categories that can be used to denote the differences between an amateur and a professional actor. Though you may not yet have fully realized the potential of each category, it is by the recognizing and pursuing each one that sets you apart as a professional. The second category is health.
Physical Health
They say that rehearsing for a play like Hamlet is equivalent to training to run a marathon, while shooting scene after scene on a movie is like running sprints all day long. Singing and dancing in a play that performs eight times a week, rehearsing and performing two different summer-stock shows simultaneously, or having the strength and stamina to do a stunt take after take. Only the actor who takes their physical wellbeing seriously and maintains the proper diet, gets lots of sleep and regular exercise will be able to meet these challenges and not collapse from exhaustion or end up getting hurt.
