Since 1878, Cleopatra’s Needle has stood at Embankment, in the City of Westminster, the heart of London. Flanked by giant Victorian Sphinxes, standing over twenty metres tall and inscribed with ancient hieroglyphs, its long and strange history encompasses the rise and fall of many empires.
Pharaoh Thutmose III and the Obelisk of Heliopolis
In fact ‘Cleopatra’s Needle’ is an obelisk that was constructed almost a millennium and a half before the birth of Queen Cleopatra VII. An obelisk is a cylindrical monument, with a pyramid cap, that in Egyptian religion symbolised a ray of the Sun-disk and the point of the horizon where the sun rose or set. They were capped with electrum; an alloy of gold and silver so that they would shine brightly when struck by the rays of the sun.
Cleopatra’s Needle was one of a pair of obelisks that Thutmose III (c1479-1425 BC) had made of granite, quarried at Aswan and brought by boat to Heliopolis, to stand on either side of the great gateway of the Temple of Ra, God of the Sun. Cleopatra’s Needle stood at the West, symbolising sunset and death, while its twin stood to the East, symbolising dawn and renewal.
