For years we have been advised to stay out of the sun or slather ourselves with sunscreen to avoid the risk of skin cancer. But now research is finding that the resulting vitamin D deficiency is causing increased risk of all the major diseases. Skin cancer rates are on the rise, as are heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, cancers and even rickets, a disease of long ago.

Get a dose of sunshine

To boost vitamin D levels, a regular dose of sunshine of just 10 to 15 minutes, or half the time it takes to burn, is all that is required. An additional supplement of 1000 mg of vitamin D3 is recommended to ensure adequate levels, or more may be needed if deficient. With this daily dose, many major disease can be prevented and many lives saved. According to William Faloon in Life Extension Magazine, Collectors Edition 2010, "Vitamin D supplementation could resolve today's health care cost crisis by slashing the need for expensive prescription drugs and hospitalizations."

The role of vitamin D in heart attack and stroke prevention

Research carried out at the Department of Internal Medicine, Medical University of Graz, Graz, Austria reported that "Vitamin D deficiency is common among patients with myocardial diseases because sun-induced vitamin D production in the skin and dietary intake of vitamin D is often insufficient." Almost all patients with heart failure showed vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency was an independent risk factor for deaths due to heart failure and sudden cardiac death.
