The video of a dozing New York City subway rider being jolted from slumber by a rodent crawling up his body made the country squirm when it went viral last week. But New Yorkers were especially skeeved out by the clip, as their city reportedly has the highest number of rats at one for every 36 people. according to Snoopes.com.

An Underground Party

You’d certainly be hard-pressed to find a straphanger who’s gone a day without seeing at rat while waiting for their train. According to New York State Senator Bill Perkins’ 2010 survey “Have You Seen a Rat Today,” nearly 60% of 5000 respondents reported seeing rodents on a daily basis. And nowadays, these sightings aren’t limited to the subway tracks below; this generation of pests congregates on the platform right beside riders (51% confirmed this). And occasionally – like in the horrifying video – they make their way onto subway cars.
